CALL FOR PRESENTATIONS

DUE MAY 15, 2000

We are inviting SCHOOL TEAMS and INDIVIDUALS to propose presentations related to the themes of the Education Summit (see box). We encourage participants to develop non-convential presentation formats for this dialogue. Formats such and dramatic readings, roundtables, interactive web chats, teleconference sessions, role plays, one act plays, transformative brainstorming sessions, musical performance, dance interpretation, artisitc, representations, fish bowl discussions, film, slides, video are most welcome.

FOR PRESENTATIONS please send a one page abstract of your presentation by May 15 that includes:
(1) Name of the sessions; (2) Name, address, phone, fax, email, and 1-2 sentence description of all presenters. (3) Brief summary of the presentation. Explain what you will share, how, and why you believe it to be important and innovative. (4) Indicate which of the key issues your presentation will address (more than one is fine.) (5) Your audio-visual needs: overhead, VCR, etc.

  • Literacy for understanding and as a tool for promoting social justice.
  • Standardized testing and learner-centered alternatives.
  • Inclusive education: models, strategies, issues.
  • Critical teaching to promote social justice
  • Interdisciplinary & thematic instruction for engagement to real community issues.
  • Positive strategies for dealing with conflict and providing emotional support to children.
  • Constructivist & authentic teaching practices.
  • Connecting learning to the community.
  • School takeovers in Chicago, Detroit, New York, & Denver.
  • The political and social context of good schooing: implications for social action and advocacy.
  • Parent leadership and partnerships for good schooling.
  • Building a culture of community in schools to promote learning.
  • Organizing to support good schooling and resist control and oppression.
