COLLABORATIVE WRITING WORKSHOP

A Speech Therapist's Perspective

Tricia, a speech therapist, explains how Writing Workshop is helpful to all children in the class but particularly students with delays in language development. She and the teacher pioneered this approach to literacy in this school. Think about her brief discussion of the purpose of Writing Workshop and how it helps students improve skills while enjoying the learning process. She describes students working on the same projects together but at very different levels of ability, what we have come to call Multi-level Intruction. This approach helps students feel successful, gives them the help and support they need, yet does not put them in ability groups where their self-esteem may be damaged and images of social inequity created.
