Meet Needs of Students with Challenging Behaviors

Learning tools. Tools for analysis, discussion, and planning you may use in class, professional development, and in your own practice as a teacher.

  • Types of problem behaviors in schools. Use Activity Tool 10-2 and ask participants to identify problematic behaviors they see in school. They can record answers on the Activities Tool. Ask participants also to use Glasser’s Five Needs and identify what needs may not be met when specified behaviors occur.
  • Five needs of human beings and behavioral challengesActivity Tool 10-3 lists glasser's five needs and asks respondents to (a) identify behaviors that may occur when a particular need is not met and (b) describe proactive ways to help meet student needs.
  • Dealing with problem behaviors: What works and what does not? Activity Tool 10-4 asks participants to reflect and describe approaches to dealing with problematic behaviors that work and that do not work.
  • Contrasting traditional behavior management and positive behavioral support. Activity Tool 10-5 can be used to have respondents compare traditional behavior management and positive behavioral support and discuss implications.
  • Communication based on respect or control. Activity Tool 10-6 asks participants to identify approaches to communication used by teachers who have a reputation for working well with challenging students and another teacher who is frustrated with many behavior problems and discuss the implications.
  • Individual student case study: Developing a behavior intervention plan. Activity Tool 10-7 outlines a simple framework for a behavior intervention plan. It asks participants to identify and describe problematic behaviors, indicate needs that may not be met of which these behaviors are an indicator, and identify strategies to help the student meet his / her needs in a positive manner. This tool provides a simple understanding of functional assessment and development of behavior intervention plans.
  • Behavioral challenges case studies: Parts 1 & 2. Activity Tool 10-8 provides two case studies designed to help pasrticipants understand graphically how knowing the meaning and needs behind behaviors is critical and leads to different actions. Part 1 describes two students with behavioral problems, one in high school, the other elementary school Part 2 provides more information that helps respondents understand the possible meaning behind behaviors.
  • Problem Behaviors and Meeting Needs. Have students list problematic behaviors and then identify the needs that are not being met that such behaviors may be communicating recording these on Activity Tool 10-9.
